The Bicycle Works

Join a fun and pretty flat group ride to Earth Day Marin from The Bicycle Works in San Anselmo - 10AM on Sunday, April 6th. Valet bicycle parking will be provided by Marin County Bicycle Coalition.

MMWD and Earth Day Marin invite music lovers, families and people who care about conservation to participate in a water rally at the main stage featuring MMWD Board President Armando Quintero and Americana Jam festival favorite Alice DiMicele (as seen with Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, etc.) teaching us to sing her classic water conservation song "Made Out of Water." The program will include humor, an inspirational call to action and a celebration of conservation heroes.

PLUS - the first 500 attendees to take action on water conservation at the MMWD Water Village will win a stainless steel water bottle!

Alice DiMicele

Alice DiMicele seeks to uplift the human experience through music. Her lyrics are love incantations to the elements earth, water, fire, and air. Drawing from a rich musical background including folk, jazz, funk, rock, and soul DiMicele's acoustic music incorporates many styles creating a fresh funky stew all her own.

With twelve self-released albums and 25 years of touring under her belt, DiMicele is a master of her craft and knows how to delight her audiences be it on a large festival stage, a theatre, or a house concert. She's shared the stage with some of music's best including Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, JJ Cale, David Grisman, Arlo Guthrie, Steve Winwood, and so many more. Armando Quintero

Armando Quintero is the 2014 President of the Marin Municipal Water District's Board of Directors. Quintero was first appointed to the MMWD board in 2009. He was re-elected in 2010 and won re-election unopposed in 2012. He represents MMWD Division II, which includes central San Rafael and unincorporated areas of San Rafael. Quintero is the chair of MMWD's Watershed Committee and serves on the District Operations Committee. He also represents MMWD on the Tomales Bay Watershed Council.

Quintero is the director of development for the Sierra Nevada Research Institute, which is housed at the University of California at Merced. Previously he spent 20-plus years with the National Park Service, most recently as the chief of special park uses for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A field naturalist, he has led and leads trips in California and Mexico. He has served on the boards of several non-profit organizat ions in Marin and California. He earned his bachelor's degree in environmental studies from California State University, Hayward.

As a sax player, he co-founded the popular 60's rock group, "The Sons of Champlin", which toured nationally and produced 6 albums. Now Tim is a legendary and beloved children's performer focused on acoustic music concerts and recordings especially for kids ages 3-8. He is well known for an extensive repertoire of environmentally-themed songs in addition to his many tracks which have become instant children's classics. Tim was paralyzed from the waist down with polio at age 7 and believes children benefit from seeing him, with his handicap, as "just a regular person whose legs don't work". He charms his audiences with the same indomitable spirit that helped him overcome adversity, and his happy-to-be-alive attitude is infectious and inspiring.

Sareena Overwater

From Switzerland! Rising international folk-pop singer songwriter sensation Sareena Overwater lures the listener under her spell using her rich and powerful voice and her touching songs. A big favorite in Ireland, she has also performed in Poland, England, Scotland and the U.S. and in major festivals such as the Oxegen Festival outside of Dublin. At the beginning of 2013 Sareena's first studio album was released. Recorded at Windmill Lane studios in Dublin, known for legendary U2 recordings, Overwater has two titles on Radio Swiss Pop's playlist and another on Swiss Jazz Radio.

John Wick

Called a visionary by Post Carbon Institute, John Wick is co-owner with his wife, well-known children's author Peggy Rathmann, of the Nicasio Native Grass Ranch. John is co-founder of the Marin Carbon Project and serves as its tireless spokesperson and advisor as it moves from research to implementation.

According to the 11th Hour Project of the Schmidt Family Foundation, "The Marin Carbon Project has shown that a single application of compost can sequester carbon in soils, increase plant production, and if scaled to 5% of California's rangelands could offset up to 10 % of the commercial and residential energy sector."

Mwanza Furaha

Celebrated Jazz Performer Mwanza Furaha will kick off the Shore Up Marin Sea Level Rise Forum by singing the classic Negro Spiritual Wade in the Water. Mwanza Furaha has shared the stage with artists including Betty Carter, Lou Rawls, Merle Saunders, Carmen McRae and many more.

Juliana Birnbaum, coauthor of Sustainable [R]evolution will speak and present a slide show filled with luscious and inspiring photos of permaculture sites and EcoVillages.

Filmmaker Louis Fox and anthropologist Juliana Birnbaum take an in-depth look at sustainable solutions in communities across the globe in their new book, Sustainable Revolution: Permaculture in Ecovillages, Urban Farms, and Communities Worldwide. Lucia Comnes

Internationally recognized chanteuse and sustainability advocate Lucia Comnes will perform at the festival this year.

A captivating singer, songwriter, guitarist and violinist, Lucia has performed with Joan Baez, was a member of Kitka, has been a favorite at the San Francisco Irish Music Festival and has shared stages with countless legends such as Linda Tillery, Taj Mahal, Anna Halprin and Maria Muldaur just to name a few.

Shore Up Marin will host a community dialogue about the impacts of climate change on water and sea level rise in Marin. Come share your concerns. Are flooding, king tides, FEMA rates, infrastructure, community safety and emergency planning on your mind? Find out what Marin residents, public agencies, and grassroots organizations are doing to prepare. You will be able to join the campaign by signing Shore Up's pledge to get Marin communities ready to face rising tides and reduced water availability! Both are coming!

Patty Garbarino

On Stage Dialog with Zero Waste leaders Patty Garbarino of Marin Sanitary Service and Diana Dehm of Sustainability News & Entertainment Radio & the Trash on Your Back 5-Day Challenge.

Patty Garbarino became President of Marin Sanitary Service (MSS) in 2000 after being with the family owned and operated business for 13 years. She was the first woman President of the California Refuse Recycling Council and was inducted into the Marin Women's Hall of Fame in 1999. The California Integrated Waste Management Board lauded MSS as having the highest recycling rate in California and the Marin County Board of Supervisors honored the company with the Golden Spire Business award in 2006. Patty has been instrumental in creating programs aimed at educating the community on waste diversion and recycling. She believes that the future of preserving and maintaining our natural resources rests in the development of awareness in o ur young people. Youth have the strength, optimism and energy to become good stewards of the land ~ we must just give them the knowledge and the chance.

Marin Earth Authors will read, discuss and sign their books from 12:30 to 2:00 at the main outdoor performance area.

Terri Glass directs California Poets in the Schools and writes poetry from a belief 'in the power of language to transform our culture and the undeniable mission to take care of this precious planet we live on.' Read her work at Terri Glass.com. (12:40)

Raymond Welch is a former natural gas trader and energy consultant who has written a gripping novel about how climate change tears apart a Bay Area family in 2028. He is active with Citizens Climate Lobby and blogs at aA Change in the Weather.com. (1:00)

Branden Barber

Starting in advocacy with Greenpeace as a crewman on the legendary Rainbow Warrior, Branden Barber has been in service to our planet's ecosystems and environmental justice for over 25 years. He has served in the leadership of Rainforest Action Network and was a board member at the International Accountability Project. Currently as Director of Engagement at Amazon Watch, he's dedicated to protecting the Amazon and advancing the rights of indigenous peoples.

Kirk Waller

A multi-talented performer, Kirk Waller weaves together spoken word, rhythm, music and movement to create an unforgettable storytelling experience. He has garnered national recognition, including a J.J. Reneaux Emerging Artist Grant from the National Storytelling N etwork and a Parent's Choice Foundation GOLD award for his CD, "But Why? Stories, Music and Songs." Kirk has told at festivals, schools, libraries, churches and special events both locally and nationally, including the prestigious Exchange Place at the National Storytelling Festival.

Erica Lann-Clark

A nationally known storyteller and solo performer, Erica Lann-Clark has been a featured teller at regional storytelling festivals here and abroad, as well as twice at the prestigious National Storytelling Festival. Her critically acclaimed comedy, "Shopping for God," was commissioned by the Marsh Theater, and her multicultural, two woman storytelling show with Olga Loya, "Believe It Or Not," was a hit at the Cabrillo Theater Festival and San Francisco Fringe Festival in 2013. In 2014, Erica will be teaching "Story in Medicine" for The Five Branches University's Santa Cruz & San Jose campuses.

Alicia M. Retes

Part Mayo, Yaqui and Cherokee, Alicia Retes is a multitalented interpretive artisan, nature guide and musician. Her work is influenced by personal wildlife adventures combined with respect and appreciation for Native cultural art. She is a Certified Interpretive Guide and Trainer through the National Association for Interpreters. She is also well-known to the Marin community through her work with from Museum of the American Indian and Camp Coyote.

Garth Gilchrist

In his stage portrayal of John Muir, Garth Gilchrist recounts the adventures and wild wisdom of this early visionary conservationist. Drawing on his own boyhood adventures ranging over the mountainous landscapes of Washington State and California, Garth has also created original, prize-winning story recordings based on his life-long love of the land. His CD, "Journeys Home," won both P arents Magazine and Pegassus awards.

Jeffrey Westman is Executive Director of Marin Organic, in addition to serving on the Board of Directors at Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm and on the leadership council for Kitchen Table Advisors. Jeffrey has been on the board of California FarmLink since 2010 and currently serves as Board President. He spent 15 years in the media and technology world, which included building and launching Yahoo! Sweden, Norway and Denmark as well as founding e-licious, a multi lingual recipe database and also revived a tangled overgrown potato farm in the north of Sweden.

Pandora Thomas

Pandora Thomas (pictured 3rd from right) is a sustainability and environmental education consultant, permaculture teacher, lecturer and writer. Featured at Tedx Denver and SF, she is a certified k-12 teacher, green building professional and permaculture teacher. Pandora co-founded Earthseed Consulting LLC, a holistic consulting firm whose work expands sustainable living opportunities for diverse communities. Through Earthseed, she currently co-leads a project inspired by work in San Quentin State Prison called Pathways to Resilience, a permaculture and ial enterprise-training program for men and women re-entering their communities after incarceration. She is also cofounder of the Black Permaculture Network as well as author of a children's book, various curricula and a green building manual for youth.

Patti Breitman

Patti Breitman is director of the Marin Vegetarian Education Group and a co-founder of Dharma Voices for Animals. She is on the advisory council of the Animals & Society Institute. She has been a vegan since 1986 and has been teaching cooking classes for 15 years. With Connie Hatch, she is the co-author of How To Say No Without Feeling Guilty and with Carol J. Adams of How To Eat Like a Vegetarian, Even If You Never Want to Be One. Her newest book is Never Too Late To Go Vegan; The Over 50 Guide to Adopting and Thriving On a Plant Based Diet by Carol J. Adams, Patti Breitman, and Virginia Messina, RD, MPh

Veronica Geretz

Veronica Geretz, M.A., CYT has been sharing the joy of yoga with children since the birth of her son in 2011. Through simple movements, stories and songs Veronica will hold space for your child to play with their bodies and breath in an enriching way. No prior yoga experience necessary. Ideal for kids ages 2-7 years old.

Sea Party, the Sea-quel

Greenwood School 7th & 8th Grades Present "Sea Party, the Sea-quel," a children's festival within Earth Day Marin. Sea Party will include super fun games and activities that teach kids and their parents about marine pollution. Each of the activities will be a "Mission" for the kids to complete, and they get "Mission Money" to donate to participating organizations.

Maurice Byrne

Called a "Wonderful Troubadour" by Andre Pessis and compared to John Lennon by Mark Le Mon, both of West Coast Songwriters, Maurice Byrne is a lyricist and singer-songwriter based in Ireland. Byrne is known for his work on film soundtracks and collaborating with Dublin singer Alicia Bar on the female empowerment anthem "Too Much Woman". He is at work on a CD for children, is collaborating with Swiss rising star Sareena Overwater. Maurice will perform his song "Sustainability" and chat with Mark Le Mon via live feed from Ireland.

Mark Le Mon with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Denis Hayes at D.C. Earth Day

Mark Le Mon has been a composer, musician, producer, film producer, voice-over, Foley artist, and writer in the San Francisco Bay Area and Internationally for more than 35 years. His career has included tenure as a composer at L.A.-based Fricon Entertainment, a producer at Digital Audio Productions, an artist manager, a composer at Techno-Pop, a partner with Element 151 Films, and a co-founder of Starmaker Entertainment. Mark is the current President of the West Coast Songwriters Association. Mark is also a Co-Founder of Yormo Inc. and Yormo.com. Mark performed at the 40th Anniversary concert for Earth Day in Washington D.C. with Artists: Sting, John Legend, Joss Stone, Booker T, Mavis Staples, Bob Weir, and others. He performed at the 2012 Earth Day event on National Mall in DC with Cheap Trick, Dave Mason, and others. Mark lives both in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Ligurian region of Italy with his wife an d daughter.

Shiloh Hobel

Vice President of West Coast Songwriters, Shiloh Hobel is a gold and multi-platinum plaque award recipient. She has sung on numerous recordings incl uding with Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston to name a few. A vocalist, composer and musician, she is known for her powerfully soulful, sultry, bluesy, yet rock-edged vocals. Her unique arrangements share a mix of airy and gospel-inspired backgrounds and harmonies. As a music industry studio and production manager, she has worked with Mariah Carey, Barbara Streisand, Santana, Huey Lewis and the News and many others.

Salote Soqo

Salote Soqo is the Climate & Carbon Management Fellow for the Environmental Justice Coalition for Water (EJCW) and the Carbon Cycle Institute (CCI), where she is working on multiple projects ranging from carbon management through compost application in urban agricultural soils to the water-related impacts of climate change on environmental justice communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Salote was born and raised in the Fiji Islands in the South Pacific, where she has been involved in various environmental consulting projects as an Environmental Scientist, and has also done extensive research into climate change adaptation of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Lisa Hoyos

Lisa Hoyos is the Director and Co-Founder of Climate Parents, a national organization working to mobilize parents and families for clean energy and climate solutions. Climate Parents engages in advocacy campaigns around the country from working to support the implementation of a strong federal rule to cut carbon pollution from power plants to supporting the growth of solar and wind energy. Lisa has a two decade history campaigning in the Labor, environmental and international fair trade movements, working with such organizations as the BlueGreen Alliance, Greenpeace and the national AFL-CIO. She also worked as a committee staffer to the CA Senate Natural Resources Committee.

BRING WITH YOU TO EARTH DAY MARIN:

CTRC will recycle almost anything that you can plug into a power outlet. This includes computers, laptops, monitors, printers and cartridges, cell phones, VCRs, televisions, copy machines, and even your microwave and toaster - WORKING OR NOT.

They DO NOT ACCEPT

Large appliances (think washing machine, stove, furnace, etc.)
Appliances containing gas or liquids (air conditioners, fridges, oil heaters etc.)
Household (alkaline) batteries (AA, AAA, C, D cells)
Any videotapes or audiotapes of any kind
Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
Any liquids of any kind

When you give your computer to CTRC, you receive a tax write-off. They will attempt to fix your equipment and then give it away to someone who is unable to a fford to buy a computer on their own. If they are unable to reuse your equipment, it will be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.
