California Film Institute: The Island President - Monday, April 15, 2013 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM
The Island President lifts the issue of global warming out of the theoretical and into the personal. President Mohamed Nasheed's nation of 1,200 low-lying islands, the Maldives, is sinking into the Indian Ocean as sea levels rise due to global warming. The movie is a little like a non-fiction Mr. Smith Goes to Washington elevated to the world stage. The filmmakers received exclusive access to follow President Nasheed as he prepared over several months for the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit. More details...
Greenwood School 7th & 8th Grades Present Sea Party, a children's festival within Earth Day Marin. Sea Party will include super fun games and activities that teach kids and their parents about coastal and watershed creatures (like whales, sharks, otters, salmon, birds and more) and the threats to them. Each of the activities will be a "Mission" for the kids to complete, and they get "Mission Money" to donate to participating organizations The Marine Mammal Center, the River Otter Ecology Project, and the Romberg TIburon Center of Environmental Studies (SFSU) and others.

Marine Mammal Center: Seal Pup Rescue 101 - Sunday, April 14th from 10am to 5pm Every spring, The Marine Mammal Center rescues many elephant seal and harbor seal pups that have been separated from their mothers due to big storms, people approaching them and scaring the mom away, or young pups unable to find food on their own. To the Rescue will discuss the care that goes into our youngest and most fragile patients. More details...

Matt Jaffe writes original music that has won "Best Original Song" awards at recent West Coast Songwriter competitions. He performs regularly in venues such as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, the Bitter End in New York City and the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Los Angeles and has opened for artists such as Tommy Castro and Graham Parker & the Rumor. Ex-Talking Heads guitarist/keyboardist Jerry Harrison will produce Jaffe's debut album.

The Do The Math documentary from 350.org is a 42-minute film about the rising movement to change the terrifying math of the climate crisis and challenge the fossil fuel industry. Salvadoran born of the indigenous group called the Lenca-Poton, David Escobar is a well-respected community advocate and an aide to Marin Supervisor Steve Kinsey. He is a leader in the green Latino and Native movements including local efforts with the Green Promotoras and cofounding Viviendo Verde. He is currently a member of the Indigenous Salvadorian Collaborative, the Binational Indigenous Salvadorian Council and teaches Indigenous studies at Dominican University.

Dr. Peter G. Joseph, MD co-founded the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility in 1979. Dr. Joseph has been trained by former Vice President Al Gore to be a Climate Reality Project speaker. He currently is northern California district manager for The Climate Reality Project and a group leader for the Marin chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby.
Peter Asmus is an expert on renewable energy and microgrids, host of Eyes Wide Open on KWMR and a member Space Debris (as heard on David Gans' syndicated radio show and at Whole Earth Festival). He will speak and MC at Earth Day Marin as well as performing his music.
Ericka Omena Erickson, MPA is a Marin County Planning Commisioner and Associate Director of Marin Grassroots. She is a current member of the Marin Women's Political Caucus and of the Board of Directors at Brazilian Alliance. Ericka received 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award presented by the Marin County Human Rights Commission among others.

San Rafael City Councillor Damon Connolly
First elected to the San Rafael City Council in 2007, and re-elected in 2011, Damon Connolly has worked hard to reduce San Rafael's contribution to global warming. In addition, Damon chairs the Marin Energy Authority, which enables all Marin County and Richmond electric customers to purchase electricity with significantly more renewable content and at affordable prices. Damon served as a leader on the Green Ribbon Committee that developed San Rafael's Climate Change Action Plan, the first to be adopted by a Marin city.
To address climate change and resulting sea level rise, Supervisor Kate Sears is initiating a pilot study in Southern Marin to examine what our Bayside communities can do to both mitigate and adapt to anticipated impacts of climate change by identifying community assets and priorities and developing local solutions. She also represents Marin on the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART), the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), the Transportation District, Richardson's Bay Regional Authority (RBRA), the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM), Marin Transit, and Marin Energy Authority (MEA). Those who pen haiku dedicated to climate change might win a chance to read their haiku on the Earth Day Marin Festival stage.
Please send just one haiku, sticking to the traditional 5-7-5 Japanese form, along with your name and town in Marin — by 5 p.m. April 5 to lifestyles@marinij.com. Please put "Earth Day Haiku" in the subject line. They will be run in the April 16 Marin IJ Plus section and online.

Mountain Bike Hall of Famer Jacquie Phelan's cycling roots go back to the Pleistocene Era (before podiums, before mountain bikes, before you were born). She created mountain biking's first skills camps in the Jurassic Era (early 80's) specifically to encourage women and girls to try dirt cycling for car-( and care)-free fun.
Secure valet bicycle parking will be provided by Marin County Bicycle Coalition.
